Sustainability chatter

Emma smith MA Design Futurer

What is sustainability?

Top brands use it for marketing but what they actually do for the environment?

Cradle to cradle

‘Products aren’t designed with recycling in mind’

Do we recycle or just down cycle?

Recycling clothing, plastic etc will not be recycled in to the original product but a cheaper or down product which is then usually not be recycled again.

Different industries are trying to downsize their consumption need. Interiors – epic small houses or capsule fashion wardrobe.

Minimalism – Netflix document / book

Ownership: possession and occupy

We all have things that have sentimental value.

There was a study carried out on kids where they offered to remake their favourite toys. All of the kids said no, some were even offended.

‘If we were to hold things better they would have a better sense of life’

We want that sense and feeling in our clothes and we are looking for them in different industries.

Ripped jeans – might make you look more adventures

Shabby chic – might make your house look more homely and ‘used’

Painted splatters – might make you look more arty and cool

Reflection:

This lecture was very interesting. Emma spoke about the consumption side more and how we should buy better rather than more. As a textiles designer she made me think more about how to make products or my work last longer. There are 52 seasons in a year now but how can we step away from that and make our clothing, interiors etc last longer. Some trends are always on style such as stripes, they have been in for year and will be in for couple of years probably.
